Structures in the dust tail of Comet Halley

The apparition of Comet Halley in 1985-86 was not especially good from the naked eye observer's point of view, especially in the northern hemisphere. However, armed with a large telescope in the south much was learned about this regular visitor.

This print, which appeared in the pages of Nature magazine, was made using an unsharp mask from the plate exposed in blue light with the UK Schmidt Telescope in March, 1986. The plate was one of the series which produced a three-colour photograph of the comet. An earlier AAT image shows the beginnings of the tail in December, 1985.
